Local mission

Mission is more than a remote overseas ministry of other people whom we support. At cp11, we encourage our people to be actively involved in missions locally, both within the church, and in activities outside the church.

Formal evangelistic ministries from cp11 as a Sunday service are described in the section on outreach.

Surry Hills Urban Mission (SHUM)

As a congregation, we send a team of people to partake in SHUM for two months each year (March and September). SHUM is an urban mission to the “street community” of the Surry Hills and Central Station area.

SHUM at Central Station

Each Tuesday evening, we gather at Central Station (at Eddy Avenue) to hand out coffee and sandwiches to those who come along. These people are those on the fringes of society, without an accepted place in work or even family. Whilst most live a transient existence, they nevertheless share that universal desire and need for acceptance by God.

The SHUM team demonstrates the love of Christ to these people who would never step into a traditional church. As they build relationships with many who return on Tuesdays, our team slowly develops opportunities to share their own faith in Jesus. On the final Sunday of each month, the team runs an informal “church service” of sorts for these people at Edward Eagar Lodge.

Kids’ Camp

For many years, young people in our congregation have ministered to disadvantaged kids each January at the Fitzroy Falls Breakway Kids’ Camps. These kids would never dream of walking into church, yet the relevance of Jesus in their lives is shared at this camp. Many of these kids have come to know Christ personally, and have grown as Christians over the years. One such girl trained at Bible college, and is now a missionary in Peru!

Christmas carols at local nursing homes

Some of the small groups at cp11 undertake local mission projects, such as singing Christmas carols at the local nursing homes around Croydon Park. For many of the nursing home residents, Christmas is a lonely time, devoid of the traditional joy of being with family. Others are so ill that they are not even aware of Christmas. As Christians, we seek to share the ultimate joy of Christmas in the coming of Jesus. They appreciate the love expressed to them by Christians merely by spending Christmas with them.
