Short-term mission trips are exciting opportunities for our congregation to experience and serve in global missions first-hand. Today we live in a very accessible world that enables us to be in touch with the globe and its issues – in fact, as Christians, we have the responsibility to do so, as we seek to live wisely!
An exciting venture from our church was to send two teams to extremely contrasting parts of the world at the end of 2007: Taiwan, and Central Asia.
There are some great reasons to go on short-term missions:
Perspective of God and his world – how does God view the world?
God’s will for you explored – where is he leading you?
Revolutionise your ministry – think missiologically!
Congregation’s mission partnership
Caring for our missionaries
Others have been involved in short-term missions within Australia:
For the first time, our English congregations had the opportunity to send teams overseas on mission. As teams, they were going as two cohesive groups, symbolic of our entire congregations. In this way, the congregations themselves were very much journeying with them on their missions, and being part of their ministries.
This was a team of 10 people who went for 3–4 weeks in Nov–Dec 2007. In seeking cross-cultural experience, we chose this country in Central Asia as it is as remote as it gets from us! Both the geographical and cultural distance was a challenging and enriching experience. This country is a mixed culture of post-Russian Communism and Islam. We went as a team sent through InterServe mission agency.

This team had the privilege of working with our church’s existing missionaries: Phil and Irene Nicholson and Wayne and Angela Chen. The team was a hands-on part of what these missionaries do day-to-day. As a result, our congregation was able to personally encourage these missios, as well as come back home to enable us to partner them in their ministries more wisely. This team was sent through OMF.
